“Wall of Honor” by Jaap Bongers, engraved black granite and cast bronze. In the Fremont Police Dept. lobby, 2000 Stevenson Blvd. Note that four officers died while on duty. Owned by City of Fremont.

Mr. Bongers earned his masters degree from the Jan Van Eyck Academie of Fine Arts in Maastricht, Holland. After receiving a grant from the Dutch government to study tribal art in Africa, Mr. Bongers stayed with pygmies in Zaire. While there, a viral infection caused the temporary loss of his eyesight and that experience influenced his work greatly. Jaap Bongers moved to California from Holland in 1986 and has lived here since then. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows here and in Europe.
