Discover & Explore Your Local Parks

Our catalog, online resources, and library accounts may be unavailable on Friday, September 28th, between 2 a.m. - 6 a.m. while we work on a catalog upgrade.

What do libraries and parks have in common? Aside from being century-old institutions, they embody the values of education, exploration, and inclusivity. That's why we've partnered with the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) to bring you Discover & Explore.

Discover & Explore is a new backpack lending program that connects families with opportunities to explore local parks and outdoor activities. The pilot program offered at the Fremont Library provides families with free access to more than 65 parks and over 1,200 miles of trails, along with opportunities for swimming, boating, and camping.

Through the backpack lending program, families get to check out a backpack that contains items to help maximize the experience of exploring the beauty of their local parks.

Alameda County Library cardholders can check out a backpack for 1 week. The first 120 patrons who check out a backpack will receive a free Nalgene water bottle.

The full contents of the backpack include:

  • Fully waterproof bag
  • EBRPD Parking Pass
  • EBRPD Family Entrance Pass
  • Digital (weatherproof) Camera & SD card
  • Binoculars
  • 3 folding Sibley guides
