Castro Valley Reads 2024

What are we Reading for 2024?

Our selection for 2024 is The Cold Millions by Jess Walter.

The Cold Millions is a propulsive, entertaining novel about two brothers swept up in the turbulent class warfare and free speech fights of the early 20th century. The Dolans live by their wits, jumping freight trains and lining up for day work at crooked job agencies. While Rye yearns for a steady job and a home, his older brother, Gig, dreams of a better world, fighting alongside other union men for fair pay and decent treatment.

Dubious of Gig’s idealism, Rye still finds himself drawn to a fearless 19-year-old activist named Elizabeth Gurley Flynn. A storm is coming, and Rye will be forced to decide where he stands. Is it enough to win the occasional battle, even if you cannot win the war?

One Valley, One Book, Many Conversations

Welcome to Castro Valley Reads!  This annual literary event asks our residents to read and discuss the same book. We build community by encouraging a thoughtful exchange of ideas, and we celebrate the joy of reading together.

In addition to discussion groups, the program includes special events inspired by the themes in the book.

For 2024 we will focus on the labor movement and income inequality through a gripping work of historical fiction set during the early 20th century fights for free speech and workers’ rights.
